Welcome!

Nicole and Grant are happy to have you visit. Read more about us, how we met and what the future holds. Be sure to check out our pictures, and leave a post below to let us know you stopped by!

About Grant

Grant lived a nomadic childhood in the southeast United States until settling in Hampton, Virginia, where his parents Skip & Suzy still live. After graduating from William & Mary in Business Marketing and German Studies, Grant toyed with the idea of robbing a bank before finding his calling to build stronger communities. Grant works for the Hampton Roads Economic Development Alliance, a public-private partnership that attracts new businesses to the Hampton Roads region. Grant’s free time is filled with improvement projects on his first house and cooking nutritious meals for Nicole.

About Nicole

Nicole Thomas always wanted to be a pony, but stayed in school and fell back on being a doctor. Nicole mostly grew up in Oneonta, New York, where her mother Joanne lives, and has extended family in the New York region. With a medical career in mind, Nicole graduated W&M with a Neuroscience degree and was accepted at Eastern Virginia Medical School right out of college. Two years later Nicole is active in EVMS philanthropies and social events, and leans strongly toward pediatrics. Nicole has no free time.

How They Met

Grant met Nicole at 305 North Boundary Street in Williamsburg after graduating. Grant was living rent-free with friends over the summer while he pretended to get his life together, but mostly he was busy planning adult summer camps and snorkeling in the public library fountain. Nicole still had a year to go, but she was in town feeding alcohol to baby mice and making them learn British football songs (it’s very complicated and scientific).

Evan Dunn, Grant’s BFF, invited Katie Cook over to the house for a cookout, and Katie brought Nicole. Says Grant: "I knew it was love when I heard her laughing to Monty Python." Says Nicole: "It was his aimless ambition that first attracted me." The two hit it off immediately and began dating in the Fall of 2004. They share passion for baseball, construction sites, and holding the remote control (a task for which Nicole believes she is better suited).

The Proposal

When Grant first moved to Norfolk in January 2006, he could see from his office window the foundation being poured for a new building in Downtown. Every day he watched the Dominion Enterprises tower being built, layer by layer, and by Spring 2007 it was nearly complete. He knew this would be a symbolic place to propose, but how?

Grant convinced the construction company, Whiting-Turner, to let him use the 20th floor balcony on the building’s west side, offering spectacular views of Norfolk’s and Portsmouth’s downtowns as well as a stunning view of the Elizabeth River. Grant prepped Nicole for the surprise by telling her that May would be Business Appreciation Month and that he wanted her to accompany him to a few fun events. With help from a coworker, Grant crafted a fake invitation to the fictitious “Grand Opening” of the Dominion Enterprises building and had Nicole dress up to meet him on a sunny Thursday after work.

“I hope they have shrimp,” Nicole was heard to say as they entered the lobby, where Frank the Security Guard directed them to the reception on the top floor. Stepping off the elevator Nicole was confused: there were signs pointing toward the balcony, but where were the other guests? Surprise!

Instead of cocktails, Nicole found a balcony strewn with roses, John Lennon’s “Remember” playing in the corner and champagne. The rest is too mushy to recall. But they took some pictures, which you’re welcome to look at here: http://picasaweb.google.com/GrantCothran/EngagementMay102007

In the Year 2009

In the year 2009, a supercomputer named Hal will match nationwide medical residency locations with thousands of newly minted doctors, including Nicole. In the year 2009, Grant will own his own house, a dog named Lola, and a Vespa. In the year 2009, Grant and Nicole will get married in Williamsburg, Virginia. It will be the awesomest.

The rest is still unwritten. If you have a great wedding idea, a life lesson worth sharing or just a note, please post it below!
